I always plant about 1 acre of watermelons just for my family and friends to have. We always eat a lot when they are ready and get tired of them so last year I started cutting them open and feeding them to my chickens I have about a truck load a week I feed to my chickens. We also feed our chickens corn shucks and pea shells and other left over stuff from our garden harvest. I have about a 100 chickens they free range on a routine, got to keep your chickens happy and healthy.

I can't imagine an acre of watermelon just for friends and family. I have 4 hills and I'm choking on them. Next year plant some winter squash instead of all watermelon. That will give your chickens some free food for the few months that the garden is dormant. It also has a somewhat better analysis (lower water content, more nutrients)

I'll have to try that I like feeding my chickens vegetables left over from my garden, thanks for the reply.

I've been giving my chicks frozen watermelon to help with the summer heat. I had a watermelon that was forgotten about in the fridge so I set it out for the chickens, the watermelon turned into water b/c the heat but I think the chickens liked drinking the water more than eating the watermelon lol
