Is your run wide open rectangle? or does it have clutter. Clutter makes more use of the vertical space, lets chickens get away from each other, and gives them more exercise. That might help with the pacing.

The run is 16 x 16 so they have plenty of space but nothing in there to keep them busy.

In my opinion more is better! I frequently rearrange it. Make use of the vertical space.

I do understand about wanting to let them out. I frequently do. But a series of wrecks has made me more cautious. What I found, if you let them out less, they get better with it.
