To the member who was posting about chickens not laying eggs for a couple of months. I don't know what part of the country where you reside but we had the same problem a few months ago and we got a feed from the store to help the chickens and added it to their regular feed of cracked corn, cooked oats and wheat bran which we give to our broodmares. That picked up the egg production somewhat but then my husband started picking up the leftover alfalfa hay that the mares drop from their feeders and placed in in several 5 gallon buckets and placed them in different areas of our 2 1/2 acres as our chickens, turkeys and peacocks are not ever in cages but are free range. Now the production has gone back to normal. We are located up in the mountains in Baja California, Mexico and it is very cold sometimes getting snow so I think the extra addition of the alfalfa might have done the trick.
Since the addition of the alfalfa I noticed that the young turkeys are larger than in past years. For me the fact that all of our poultry are stress free. No cages. We have a helper who knows all of the animals and has turkeys sitting on chicken eggs and vice versa so we always have lots of babies in spring.

Makes sense.
Chickens are omnivores and not horses. Corn, oats and bran are not chicken feed. Way too low in protein for chickens to be productive.
Laying hens need about 16% protein to ovulate well and those grains are around 10% protein in the aggregate.
