Hi!! I had 6 hens, 3 Leghorn & 3 Tetra Brown. A few days ago we suddenly lost a Leghorn. Up until we lost her all my chickens laid an egg daily. But since we lost her my remaining 2 leghorns have only laid 1 egg each. My Tetra Browns seem to be fine. Is this normal?

It could be stressed related. If the other hens are upset by the loss they may have stopped laying. It could also be unrelated. Like maybe if the weather got really hot. Has anything else changed?

Stress will cause a halt in laying. Hens need to feel safe in order to lay, they will resume when they feel more comfortable again.

You say you lost her...... was it predation our health related? The loss of the bird is likely the roit of the stopped production...either due to stress ( if it was an attack) or possibly infection with the illness that took her (if health related death)

We think something spooked her. She was fine the day before she died. We found her dead in the morning when I went to let her out in their run.

We got 2 new puppies and have had them for 2 weeks now. The puppies do not bother the chickens. They cannot get in run or near the coop. If the chickens go to the fence the Tetras will come over and see them. The Leghorns don't seem bothered by them either. They go about whatever they were doing.

If the dogs don't seem to bother them and they are in good heath otherwise, it's probably the death of the other hen.
