Chickens not sleeping in coop

Hi
Can someone please tell me what to do chickens keep on refusing to sleep on my roost and my rooster doesnt go into the coop everynight i have to put him on the roost
I did lock them up for about a week
And put a light

Maybe the roost doesn't feel "right" to them? My bigger hens seem to prefer wider roosts -- except for one coop of "big" girls who are fine with narrower ones. My Buff Orpington went through a period of several weeks where she decided to sleep on the coop floor, then suddenly decided to return to her roost. My accidental house chicken likes to sleep in a pink plastic tote. In my world, chickens do what they want, and I'm just along for the ride.

As far as having to put your rooster back in the coop at night, some of my hens would (and have, despite my best efforts) stay out all night. Just like kids, they don't understand the dangers they could face in the dark.
