I have a bunch of hens who have been laying almost daily for the past few months.
I have one birchen Cochin bantam who likes being broody, and she takes the longest breaks, but otherwise they basically all lay 5-7 eggs a week. Some have a day off every week.
Three weeks ago my Dominique and birchen Cochin were broody and that was the last time the Dominique has laid, she’s not broody anymore, and the other has laid a few in between and is still broodyish on and off.
My Australorp has taken a few more breaks than normal, and has been giving us three eggs a week maybe, and she was my best layer.
I have two other baladi ones that haven’t changed much.
What could be the issue? Nothing in their feed changed, I’ve been letting them roam the property in these past few weeks, and they get water and scraps.
It’s hot out, but the same as three weeks ago. I have one newly mature rooster in the flock who has been trying to mate with them, could he be stressing them out?
Please help! Maybe I need to change something. Thanks.

Majesty, our Penedesenca below. Culprit?

We’ve noticed that changes in the weather effect our ladies egg production. It usually lasts a few days before picking back up.
Also, different breeds don’t all lay the same amount of eggs annually. It’s not timed out and we believe the lower production hens will lay for consecutive days then take days off.
Give them some time. We have been getting 70+ a day from 100 hens, some hens are older, although the past few days it has dropped to 45.

How old are your hens? Did they take a break from laying in the fall/winter? It is normal for a hen not to lay for a time after being broody. It is also very common for hens to take a break during an extended hot streak.

Some are 10 months and some are 11/12 months
