chickens only going to one side of coop

Every day when I go to clean the coop, I always see the poop on only the 6ft tall wall instead of on the 4ft wall. My chickens are 3 months old now so I want to build the nesting boxes. Previously I was planning to build the boxes on the 4ft side, but seeing this made me think they would not go to the nesting boxes am I correct? Should I build the boxes on the 6ft side?

It sounds like you have two roost poles? When chickens roost, they usually want to be at the highest spot they can get up to. You want your roosts higher than the nest boxes so they don't try to nest on or in the nest boxes, though ideally not directly above them so they don't poop on them. They will use nest boxes that are lower.

I think Kelsie meant roost above.


You can put an angled board over the nest boxes so they don't roost on the tops of them.
