Chickens prefer Home Depot to Lowe's (buckets as nesting boxes)?

We cut the buckets in half lengthwise and it worked pretty well.

Update: We followed up by having kiddo test out the color preference of our neighbor's hens, and make it into a science fair project for school.

Our neighbor doesn't use buckets, just plain wood with rectangular wash basins, so we just stapled up orange and blue fabric over the wood. Result: on our street, regardless of breed, the hens like orange better than Lowe's blue nesting boxes.

She got first place for her grade at the school science fair, but as usual didn't merit an honorable mention at the big island wide (100 school) one. *I* thought she did an exceptionally nice job. Maybe they thought she didn't really write it. Maybe they didn't think it had "real world applications" (are they vegan) or wasn't original enough. Maybe they thought the scientific basis was bad, not knowing the range of colors chickens actually see. Whatever. 5 years of winning at her school, and getting no recognition at the big science fair. We obviously have no clue.
