I have a small flock of laying hens. I also have quqil in several diferent pens. I am wondering if I can put the quail pens (that is up on legs) inside thew chicken yard? I am needing to consolidate my birds. The chickens & quail could not mix but could see each other .
What say ye?

Well, there is a thread going on here about quail that are sick b/c of being with chickens, but........ I have a very small barn, 20x24--12x 20 being used by horses the other 12x20 for my rabbits, chickens, ducks and quail who all share the same small space. Rabbits three high on one wall, quail three high on the other wall, with a common area for ducks and chickens. I have not had any problems.

someone will probably be along shortly to chastise me for keeping themm all together.

Well my opinion is that if your chickens aren't sick, they won't make your quail sick

The thread mentioned involves coryza, so obviously that would make anything sick. I don't think you'd have any problems if you don't have sick birds.

The problem with that theory is that unless the birds are in a covered run that the bird flying by might be a carrier & contaminant the run. You may never is it in the chickens but it may kill the weaker birds that they are in contact with.

That is something to think about. But the quail & chickens are outside already & wild birds are every where any way so I guess that is nothing I can do any thing about.

Are the Quail on the ground? They can still get sick from wild birds but not as likely if there in the air a few feet. Also they are in a small area which is less likely to get hit by droppings. You probably also have a top on the cages which would almost eliminate the chance of a wild bird affecting them. With chickens which cover larger areas running the same yard as the quail though they could easily contract something that isn't evident in them but for another species could be it could be devastating & they being around your quail all the time would make to chances of transmitting almost certain.

When people that know tell you that its not a good idea to put quail and pheasants in with chickens listen to them. I had a pair of golden pheasants in with chickens and they were doing fine. Then they got sick and both died.
