Chickens scared of tarp!?

KarenP, your new coop looks great. I will be building one to replace the web bought one. Our set-ups look very similar with the chainlink fence around the coop. Looks like you made a big improvement in the build-your-own. Well done!

Thank You!! Our big flock 2 roos and 7 pullets are in the one we built, and our small flock of 1 roo and 5 pullets are in the web coop. We are keeping the 2 coops, we have done extras to make the small one stonger!!

I normally carry my chickens produce scaps in a clear sterilite container. The other day had I put them in a black feed bucket (which I use to fill their feeder, but they never see) cause it was handy. When I walked into the run with the bucket, you would have thought I had a 400 pound coyote on a leash. The chickens absolutely freaked out. They all high-tailed it for under the coop in a sqaukfest. As soon as I started dumping the scraps in their trough the bravest one came out and started chowing down... she got all the select morsels before the other girls decided to take a chance on the "scary black bucket".

We got our 'leaky coop' from EBay. They are not so great. I mean it's' okay if you know up front it is what it is and you will probably end up painting it or sealing it or something. But my husband built our first one from plans for the Big Garden Egg chicken tractor coop I think it was and we liked that one. It's not huge but you could make it bigger I guess. We only have five chickens in that coop so it's perfect for them. But it is so well built and designed and no matter what the weather never has a drop of water in it.

Then we bought an elevated coop that was hand made by someone else and it is also very well built.

I did this when my chicken tractor had a leaky seam, and it didn't last but a day...my goofy girls stripped the entire seam of sealant off and ran around the yard with it in their beaks like it was a super worm! They didn't eat it, but I was worried that they would. Worried enough that I chased them around the yard like an idiot, trying to get the sealant out of their mouths!

OK, this makes me laugh. Mine were afraid of a strawberry the other day. Really, girls? It's a strawberry.

Mine are afraid of my rake, to clean out the coop's wood chips. XD
