Chickens sleep outside

View attachment 1828581 Without knowing how many chickens, their age and dimensions of the coop, it's a little hard to say for sure. It could just be they haven't learned to go inside at night, you have to teach them. Just place them on the roost after dark every night for a week or so and they should start doing it on their own.

But if you have more than 3 birds, it could be a little crowded for them. I started with a prefab and I felt it was barely enough room for 3 grown hens that free ranged every day AND it was the XL size! Their specs are very deceiving and usually list bantams when advising how many birds will fit. And you definitely have to add a lot more ventilation... can never have too much!

Even with my much larger coop and run now, if I place a high perch in the run they will sometimes want to roost there at night. The only solution I found was to remove the perch, then they somehow prefer to go roost inside. Best wishes with your flock!
I had thought of that as well. Might give it a try tonight.

I have 12 chickens and a Roo. I taught them to stay in their large coop by putting them in there and keeping them there for about a week. After they decide where to sleep they will go back. The first 2 nights I did have to put them physically in the coop and shut the door. They just ran up to me and I popped them in. After that they go in by themselves.

Unfortunately it's too hot in AZ to do that. The coop gets so hot during the day I keep the door open so it airs out.

Just an update... I removed the outside roost and boi were the chickens mad!!! They yelled at me for a good 30 minutes. I was able to get them all up in the enclosed "house" portion of the coop and close the sliding door to the run. After about 15 more minutes of fussing at me they settled down and went nighty night at sleepy sleeps house.
