They need to sleep together, like you said if the younger one gets too close the older one will give her a peck and let her know it, they will work it out themselves.
They really should be able to be together.
I have some that sleep on the roost and will squish together even though there is like two more feet of roost space on the end, the others like the silkies or the babies, will pile together in the corner on the floor, pig pile on top of each other.
