Hi all! First time poster here!

So my boyfriend and I just got 3 little chickens, one silkie and 2 French Marans and we built them an awesome coop and popped it in our back yard. At first we had to put them in at night because they hadn't quite figured it all out, which is normal, so after about a week-10days of rounding them up, we went out one night and voila! They had put themselves to bed. About a week later, they won't come out lol! They will come down a few times a day but mostly they are up in their coop. I lure them out with mealworms and once they've had their fill they go right back up! Is this normal? Should I be worried?

If they are apparently okay, there is nothing to worry about because of this behavior. Is there any possibility that there is a hawk or other predator in the area? It also may be cooler in the coop.

Welcome! Glad to have you!

My guess is your chicks just aren't adjusted to their new surroundings yet, so are a bit leary to come out. Like sourland suggested, there could be another reason for them not coming out, chickens don't like to come out in the sun for long periods of time if it's above say, 85F, and might prefer the coop for that reason. I would just give them some time to settle in and see how they do. Good luck with your new flock!

Ok great! It is VERY hot during the day right now. I live in Florida so that could be the reason. It is in a mostly shady spot but still...even in the shade it's hot down here. Thanks for the info guys!
