I'm really new at this but as with any animal, I think it just takes patience. We got 6 eight month old RSL's on Saturday. Believe it or not, when I helped transfer them to the transport cage was the first time I'd ever in my life touched a live chicken. Five of the six are pretty calm, one of them is a bit more skittish. But whenever we approach the pen, they all come running...they're incredibly curious. I always try to take something with me when I go...that way they associate seeing me as being a good thing. I also get in the pen with them quite a bit. They come quite close and will peck at my shoes a bit. If I move to touch them, they'll shy but don't go all screaming and flapping...just take a step or two. Then I sit on the ground and talk soothingly. I noticed this morning that if I move very slowly so as not to startle them, one or two will let me touch them for a moment. They have no problem taking food from me if it's something they like, LOL.
Given the progress in such a short time, I'm quite confident that we'll be able to handle them soon. Even so, the intention is just to get them conditioned to it so if we need to "catch" one for examination or to move her, we can do it without unduly stressing them
