Hi All, I am a backyard chicken guy, who has 5 chickens. 3 RIR, 1 barred rock and 1 silver laced wyandotte. For the last several weeks my egg production has been decreasing to the point where I am getting 1 or 2 eggs per day. The chickens are 14-15 months old, show no signs of distress or disease. they are kept in a good sized run, I'm just plain out of ideas. They are eating Poulin grain layer pellets. any thoughts or ideas? my thought is maybe they're getting ready to molt, but I have no idea. Please help!

Hello! I have been going through the same problem! My chickens laid spring, summer, fall, and winter last year. This spring they kept laying, and finally they're bodies needed a break very badly, (I didn't "make them lay" by putting a light on them either.)

So just this month a few of them have molted very early, I thought something was wrong at first, but after they finished the molt they began laying as before.

After the first laying year, a hen's egg production just naturally begins dropping off. (Well, that's how it is with me at least.)

Are they losing feathers?

Is it super-hot where you are? Are they eating/drinking ok?

Sometimes I've had production drop off due to heat. Usually mine would take a break around November, but often in July/Aug too.
