Chicken's tail damaged

I think she may have a good chance at making it. Just keep it clean and put antibiotic ointment on it to keep it moist and sanitary while it heals. Anything red may be pecked by the other chickens. We use a spray on wounds called BluKote, but it's main ingredient is gentian violet, a very old antiseptic/antifungal liquid that turns everything blue. Good luck with your girl.

Post op pic. It's tricky getting pictures of your chickens butts! She seems very happy. I'll keep a close eye on her and update if she takes a turn for the worse. Otherwise consider her on the mend.

Thank you very much for your comments and help!

Some updates for anyone coming across this with an injured chicken. Pictures are dreadful to look at I know but hope this helps someone in the future. I've established the chicken's injury is at the exit of it's vent (I think this is correct). The top part of skin above the exit hole was partly torn off and I removed it completely.

I have cut feathers away from the injury and cleaned it up in a warm water bath.

I spoke to a friend from Thailand who recommended a remedy they use for injured birds in cock fighting. We made a mixture of turmeric, lime powder and water and applied to the injury.

Here she is checking out our handy work. She's in with the others, eating, playing and generally seems fine. That's the end of my chicken butt adventure.
