We are going to be new to raising backyard chickens so any help will be greatly appreciated. We just order our coop and separate run that connects last night and we are not looking for have more then 3 hens.
My question is, are there specific breeds that are better at pest control then others... especially earwigs. I’d love to hear if your hens eat them and what kind you have. We also live in Idaho so we have to deal with hot summer and cold winters. We have two small kids so we love the idea of organic pest control and backyard eggs.
We did a ton of research on the coop and got a very well insulated one with ventilation and two laying boxes and a separate run that can be attached or detached. Any and all suggestions will be a huge help. We also have an Apple tree in the backyard that drops a ton of apples with worm holes so I’m sure they’ll love that as well.

Thanks for your help.

Any chicken worth its weight in salt should be a good bug eater if they can find them during the day.

Here are two excellent breed charts for your perusal.

Most breeds should be OK there.
The best breed I've found for both heat and particularly cold is the Jaerhon. They're from Norway but being a small tight feathered bird, they've fared very well in our summer heat.
My Penedesencas are heat hardy but they've survived down to -19F.
