Chicken's toe nails

Lay him on his back where you can get a good look at the bottom of the nail, and just trim a little each week or so, like a dog's nails, because the vein extends down into the nail. You can use a file, too, whatever you are comfortable with.

Usually if there is a brick or concrete block or such around, they will keep them worn down themselves, at least partway.

Position as ddawn said (a second set of hands is a great help). Using dog nail clppers gradually trim the nails. At this point the quick has probably extended farther than normal out into the nail. If the nail starts bleeding, stop trimming and stop the bleeding with silver nitrate or styptic pencil. By trimming the nails every 2 to 3 weeks, you can gradually force the quick back to normal. The rooster will then have normal feet and be much happier. Three inch nails must be bothersome to him.
