Chickens trashing my grass!

lol if you like nice grass and have a small patch of it don't get chickens we have 1.5 acres and the grass quality is nicer and greener and thicker where the chickens have been they free range and are in a large chicken tractor. Of course we don't fertilize or use pesticides so our lawn is 10 types of grass and weeds mixed. A nice varied diet for my chickens

I think every square inch of the run is "plowed/turned" every day at least once.
I let them out in the late afternoon and escort them to the spot that needs weeding today. Then I go in the house. 2-3 hours later I go out, the weeding is done where I wanted it and the girls have put them selves away for the night. I just close the gate for them.

Mine decided to have a nice little dust bath in the garden this morning. Most of my garden is fenced, mind you, just not the onions and potatoes

The romantic idea of chickens following me around in my yard., clucking and scratching as we go.

I have a double lot and I'm going to see what happens when I let them out. They are 9 weeks Monday. I've opened the coop door twice and they come out and hang right by the coop....
But I know that won't be for long.....

*Big Sigh*

pretty soon you will be like me making sure that the grass is not greener in the neighbors yard so to speak. I have to make sure my hens stay in my not fenced in suburban backyard! it is fun and mine do fallow me everywere when I whistle 10 hens come running and the 11th (she is really stupid

) I have to go pick up and cary with me maybe she is deaf? I have trained them using scratch grain (chicken crack) TODAY ONE OF THE SKITISH NEW AMERAUCANA HENS ATE SOME RADISH SPROUT GREENS OUT OF MY HAND !!!!!!

You will love chicken keeping its the best even if is does mean sacrificing your grass

I was thinking today how nice it would be to have my 3 chicks "help" me in the front yard... too bad it's not fenced in. I'd hate to lose a chick for any reason!

Lots of space and available dusting spots where YOU want them to dust...not just willy-nilly all over the yard. I let them dust by the henhouse and by the cellar house. As long as they have these, they have never offered to make anymore. My yard looks lovely!
