Dear Chicken Lovers,

I currently participate in the Pikes Peak Urban Garden Program. Recently we were given 8 chickens and a coop to raise chickens. I believe that we are the only ones doing it out of all the gardens around Colorado Springs.

The problem that I am having now is that the person that is in charge right now appears to me to be a chicken hater. Even thought no one is gardening right now she does not want the chickens let out of the coop. Today was the last straw for me it seems as she put a lock on the coop door and a lock on the door where we check for eggs. This makes thing more difficult as I cannot keep as close an eye on them as before.

Also I was told that I am no longer allowed to clean the chicken coop . This was told to me under threat that I would no longer be able to take care of the chickens. It has been over a year that I have been taking care of our chickens and I have become quite found of them and their behaviors. All this is simply distracting from the enjoyment I was having with the chickens.

What can I do about this problem? Thanks-Jeff

How does she expect you to feed and water them? Maybe she wants them to get into deplorable condition and for the coop to smell to high heaven - so SHE can have you thrown out for neglecting and abusing your bird. I don't know how anyone could deal with this type of person.

Would she allow them outside if you have an enclosed, roofed run for them so they cannot free range and destroy whatever she thinks they might I would think she wouldn't mind their droppings to fertilize a garden.

I think the law should be involved..
They should be told on what she did I would think that is some sort of abuse.. how are they to eat and drink.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! I am not familiar with the way the program works. Who legally owns the chickens and coop etc? Is there anything in writing about who is responsible for their care? Is there someone higher up in the program you can go to?

Do you have anything in place to protect the chickens while they free range in the garden area? If not, then it's probably best they stay in the coop. I don't consider that being a "chicken hater", I call that being responsible. One simply cannot send the chickens out on range with a kiss for luck and expect they will survive, particularly if they are not used to free ranging.

It sounds like you are having more of a personal issue with the person in charge than you are having a flock problem. I'm sure someone is feeding/watering/cleaning the coop if you are no longer allowed to do so, so the locks seem to be more of insurance against people breaking the rules of the coop than a "mean" thing to do. I'd refer all of these issues to the people in charge of the PPUGP and then try to cooperate with their decisions on the matter.

Welcome to BYC!

If you feel these chickens are indeed being abused, I would get the law involved. I would not stand for any animal abuse.

Good luck with this and do what you think is best. Welcome to our flock!

Thanks Everyone,

I am going to talk with Eric the person who donated the chickens and the coop and see what he has to say. I feel that everyone who is interested should have an equal opportunity to be involved. Also it appears to have evolved into being a demo project so the surrounding community can become interested in raising chickens of their own. With all the locks on everything what are visitors going to thin?.

Thanks for all your comments-Jeff

Thanks for your help. I think I might have to do something more drastic because when I went to see the chickens last Friday the windows on the coop were shut and the sun was blazing away. The only way to open the window was to reach through the nesting boxes and pull back the levers. I couldn't do it by myself so I got help. I had to unscrew the lock she had on it. I thank God she did not cover up the screws. The coop has gotten up to 100 degrees sometimes. I did call the humane society and they said to call them if these problems or any others persist.

Thanks-Jeff
