Chickens vs. Neighbor Kids

A very good suggestion and a great possibility to change the course for some young people. Hopefully their parents will be amenable to this idea and they might also get some "changing."

The only one thing I might differ on is that everyone deserves respect right off and it is there to lose, rather than having to earn it first.

I live right next to a Mexican trailer park there are always kids and even adults coming on our property and at 12:00 there are still kids running around outside screaming and music blasting up.

I admire the folks who suggest working with these kids and trying to teach them something about chickens, but if it was happening to me, I'd want to knock their heads off. Yeah, I know that doesn't do anything to solve the problem, but I'm being honest.

Not only a lock on the coop, but the next time the kids set foot on your property, go out and tell them they are no longer allowed in your yard because they chased the chickens. Their own bad behavior has consequences. Keep them out of your yard from now on.

Sorry to hear about the neighbor issues, I understand how that goes.
There was a group of about a dozen, same age range, in one of the yards joining our back yard once. I happened to be outside in the front at the time when I heard one yell, "Let's get that duck!" They charged forth as a herd heading toward my girl. I went to the side where Kamo (the duck that was to be "gotten") usually rested during the day. As soon as they saw me, the whole group scattered, screaming back toward the other house.
About a year after that, the two oldest boys that live there were in our back yard again. This time having a face-off with the rooster. I caught them as the oldest (with stick in-hand) drew back his arm preparing to hit the rooster with the stick. His explanation was that they didn't want the chickens to go into their yard. I said, "They are in my yard and welcome, you are in my yard and NOT. Go home."

I took care of all problems (so far) by building "brush piles" along that fence line. Thorny branch piles 3-foot high tend to deter the two-legged predators. ;)

Crazy enough - this has happened to me numerous times. We used to live in a neighbourhood with many kids who liked to visit without asking. They never intended to hurt them, but it drove me up the wall with anger when they went IN my fenced in yard, chased my birds, caught and held them. :rant

Really though.. Does no one watch their kids anymore?!

Brush piles, thorny bushes and/or Stinging nettle. I LOVE my stinging nettle which will hurt you for hours when you brush up on it.

Shame about kids. I only had to deal with them cutting through my yard, but that was enough for me to put up a fence.
