Chickens when renting

I've been looking for a rental house in my area (Atlanta) recently, and have had pretty good luck with landlords being OK with chickens. The best way I found was to ask about conventional pets first, then ask about pets that would stay outside, then chickens. One landlord seemed really excited at the prospect of free fresh eggs (not like I would say no!). The only time I ever had a negative response was when I asked right off the bat, and then the landlord just stopped responding to my emails. Maybe he thought I was joking? :/

Now only if I could find that golden combination of affordable + nice house + nice neighborhood.

I live in a rented house that doesn't allow any pets (or bikes) in the house as written in the contract. But, after living there for a little while and asking if we could get a few chickens my landlord's response was "why the **** not!".
Most landlords don't want pets because they're worried about damage - cats peeing on the rug, and dogs scratching doors, etc. Chickens aren't going to damage anything.

If it was legal, I wouldn't ask - unless it's prohibited in the lease. There's no reason for the landlord to have a problem with it, as its not going to devalue the property any. Landlords don't get to dictate your life - they have specific legal privileges and rights, and so do you.

True. Its not like I'm keeping cows that would rut up the ground or eat all the grass off the ground. Chickens can't do too much property damage i hope.

I'm renting also. They know we have a dog and cat, but I didn't ask about chickens because at the time we didn't own any. The yard was already fenced for a dog anyway, so it's used for the chickens to range in. I just made sure to build a coop that could be moved and would fit through the gate so we can take it when we leave. I don't plan on leaving evidence when we eventually leave. They'd expect us to pick up the dog droppings anyway, so I don't see any harm in keeping the chickens as long as we clean up.

This sounds very familiar to my situation. They are cool with dogs outside, and the yard is fenced in. The landlord lives in FL so she won't be visiting all too often, if at all. Im pretty positive that I will be able to keep them without noticing. And if they do notice, worse case scenario is we offer to pay more rent.
