Chickens who HATE snow?

Update! My chickens started laying again on Valentine's day! I can't believe how much I missed their delicious eggs. They still won't venture in the snow, though.

Thanks! I even missed all the racket they make when laying

Now the temps are higher here. It is raining and the snow is starting to melt, making the ground around the run very muddy. Does anybody have a way of keeping the place dry when that happens? I appreciate the feedback.

Our run is quite large. When it gets muddy down there I thrown down fresh hay so they have something dry to walk on.
Same here. Straw in this case, from under the chicken house where I shoveled it 6 months ago. The poop has disintegrated by then and it recycles the straw. Gives them something fun to scratch for.

Thanks for the input. I have pine shavings in the tiny run under the coop. I'll try putting straw around it to keep the water from the snow from seeping in from under the fence. I just worry about mold growth, but it shouldn't be a problem with the temps still on the low side.
It's funny how the chickens would rather go in the rain than in the snow.

I wonder if folks could weigh in on the issue of wet straw getting moldy? I have the same question- I'm dealing with a flooded out run, and have three "ruined" bales of straw I could open to try to absorb it. But if they were walking on wet straw for a couple of weeks, is that as much of a health problem as walking in standing water?

I throw down straw or hay, which ever one I have. They like digging in it and it covers the mud.
