I look forward to seeing pictures of them! I get not wanting them to go broody quite that much - it sounds like you had a lot of chicks.Thank you so much for the warm welcome. As wonderful as it was to watch mamma hens raising chicks, I will need to get better at 'breaking' some of my serial broodies next year. Hens going broody two/three times this spring/summer is not ideal. They certainly made some beautiful hens (and I can't wait to share some pics) but I have learned my lesson and will manage things a bit differently next year. Thankfully my sister loves eggs and so far I haven't been able to keep up with the demand so far.
Welcome to BYC!!(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? I got my first dozen chicks almost two years ago
(2) How many chickens do you have right now? Is there such a thing as too many?
We had a couple girls go broody after a month of laying last year so it wasn't too bad but this spring broodiness spread like wildfire and we had 50+ chicks hatch.
(3) What breeds do you have? Mostly cold hardy heritage breeds. Live in central Alberta so our winters are harsh.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? Their personalities. They are a hoot. I love when they come running/flying from the back of the property when they hear me coming out.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? I used to hike and travel but my life is now dedicated to raising my animals and i couldn't be happier.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. We have two wonderful dogs that are great with all of our animals and get to enjoy the occasional omelette in return. Sadly one of my older hens went missing last week (first one ever) when we got hit with our first brutal cold spell and snow dump. I am devastated, Florence with her floppy big comb was a character and I'm absolutely gutted that she is gone.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? Ever since I thought about getting chickens and certainly once I got them, this has been my 'go to' for information. I have learned SO MUCH in the last couple of years.
