I don't know, I had a bunch of pics of hens looking up so I thought, "what are they thinking about?" (Incidentally, they were looking at the roof.)

Ha ha, mine do that too. I think they do it to 'make you look' too because I never see anything but dust and a few cob webs on the ceiling.

They are looking for hawks and other dangers from the sky! Look up next time, and usually a bird or shadow is flying over. Even if it's a tiny songbird, it can put them on the alert.
