Chickens wont leave coop

I would not put feed and water inside. They have no motivation to come outside if you do. I have never had a chicken starve itself to death because it wouldn't come out and eat. I don't think your coop looks big enough to put food and water in there without ending up with a huge mess.

OP, it's plenty warm for them (@Ducks4us - OP is not n the U.K., so they are talking 5 degrees Celsius - about 41 degrees Fahrenheit).

mine still wouldnt have come out with out a dry area to cone too. worked great for me. many people always feed in the coop, they will come out eventually. i certainly doest make a "huge" mess

In my opinion, that coop doesn't look big enough to have six adult sized chickens walking around in it, let alone having food and water dishes on the floor.

My chickens will venture out in the rain and snow (as long as there is little accumulation). I think the main thing right now is they aren't familiar with their surroundings. They'll come out when they get hungry enough.

Hi,

many thanks for input, just to let you know that I had coop checked before purchase of hens, fully suitable for 6 birds , it is sufficient for their needs to keep them safe etc from predators and somewhere to shelter , these are one of the most popular coops in UK very little use of full size hen houses as in the states unless larger numbers are kept (as far as I can tell from research) , mostly domestic and urban use here but that said I envisaged the point of free range is to let them roam as much as possible foraging and our plan is that the hen house is movable around our small orchard and for them to shelter in when required at night etc.

Many thanks

I hope the people who make and sell prefab coops in the U.K. are more honest than the ones here in the States. Many of our coops like that are advertised to hold 4-6 hens when in reality, they can hold about half that many comfortably.

Hi ,
All your comments have worried me a little so I sort local advice as well so I spoke to my neighbours who are chicken keepers and have shown them my set up, they agree that the coop is fine for my birds for now but wouldn't expand their numbers any. I think I have what they called medium hybrid brown layers, which will suffice in this size coop. They said to keep an eye on them and if I have any issues with them to let them know and they will take a couple of birds off me to alleviate any problems but think everything will be OK.

will keep you posted

many thanks
