chickens?

Rhode Island Reds are a nice choice also. They are very friendly and peaceful(safe for kids). Fantastic egg layers. Some people even say that they help those who are helpless and injured!

Buff Orpingtons are also great. They are a somewhat perfect chicken; Sweet, friendly and docile, good layers and very easy to take care of. They also get broody at times.

Yes, providing shelter is quite a must because of weather and predators. Almost anything will do: dog houses(make sure it's big enough), old storage sheds, etc. You can also build your own! It's fun to design your own chicken coop, but of course requires some hardwork(or hire a carpenter).

Good luck!
