Chickentrain's Dog Q&A

Question: my dog is VERY scared of other dogs. He paws at me to try to let me pick him up. How did any of you train your dogs to get used to other dogs? Would the solution just be taking him out more often? He is only scared of certain dogs larger than him, so he’s always been fine with other small-medium sized dogs.

I’ve just been taking Finn over to every dog that the owner says is ok
Today he met GSP, ND, and an old black lab
but its kinda different for him because he’s still socialization age, you missed that
I’d get a calm dog that’s only slightly larger than her that you know, bring the dog to YOUR house, and pair the meeting with lots of positive experiences like toys and treats.

Yeah, we missed that age. :(I thought that if we socialized him with our own dogs it would be better, but it wasn’t. Today at the dog park, we met a GSD PUPPY(younger than him) who just wanted to play. Because he was larger, my dog was very scared and even jumped on a table in an attempt to run away.

Sadly, I don’t know any other dog owner, so I’ve trying to do it out in the public...

Finn met ND earlier when I wasn’t there and apparently did well. Saw her again and they sniffed for a second and then she was literally stepping on him in an effort to get to me. I put him away and went back to see her without him. They had her on a choke chain attached to a retractable leash, which had the choke chain constantly tightened :(

thats god awful. The choke chain should be put on the dog in a "P" shape, otherwise the choke will not slide back loose. The choke is meant as a MILD correction for... guess what? ALREADY TRAINED DOGS!!! my well trained dog wears a choke as a reminder to not pull because dogs aren't robots, and even my well trained dog pulls ahead! Chokes aren't for out of control dogs!!

and flexies should ONLY be attached to harnesses IMO, as they lock with a button, and that can cause serious injury for a dog running forward on a choke, and it gives the dog WAY too much freedom with NO leash pressure. AWFUL!! for a untrained dog.. JEEz
