Chickentrain's Dog Q&A

He does NOT like it when you walk up to him all willy nilly and act like you've known him forever. You need to go slow, talk soft, and just wait for him to get used to you. Before long, he'll be in your lap. It just takes patcience. Move too fast too soon, and he will growl or nip. He's growled at several people who have reached out to pet him without asking. If they ask I can ask the person to be slow and give him some food.
You can't lie to a dog. Walking up all friendly and baby-talking them and acting like you're old friends just rouses their suspicions and resentments. Dogs do need time to assess the situation. Best way to get acquainted is to ignore the dog, don't make eye contact, and talk to the OWNER in a normal voice. When the dog sees that the owner is comfy with you, it will approach and sniff you (peferably your butt, lol) and then relax. At that point you can casually include the dog in the conversation. But that high-pitched, squealy baby voice? Please. Just no.

Usually I just ask them to not be loud, no baby voice, just a calm steady voice. I HATE it when people say in that dumb voice "awh hi baby puppy dog"... uh. stop please.

I am NOT social at all. I have social anxiety, so yeah, he feeds of me. duh. What can I do, lol. We make a good team though, and I'm getting braver. I'll usually just say "please don't pet" and they'll leave. Especially If I am overwhelmed, a "don't pet" is best.

Sounds like a good strategy. Sometimes I would tell people, Uh, hi, my dog is in training, you wanna help me? And of course they did. So I'd ask them to not pet until I told them to. I'd have the dog sit and then say okay they could pet. That way I'd have both the dog and the visitor under control. And I never tell them the dog's real name. 😉

yeah i'd die before I went up to a stranger and asked for something.. ha.

If somebody asks to pet, I try my best to hold small talk with them, as they pet my boy. I usually refuse men and children. Petite women (like me) are usually the best, hes rarely nervous around them. Makes for good conditioning. I try not to ever let him fail. When he accepts a friendly (petite woman) we can move up to trying to allow other people to pet him.

but anyways, i'd rather nobody touch my dog. but people just really wanna for some reason and i guess its good training

Socializing. Lots of exposure to people. The more the merrier. IMO, dogs that are well socialized do very well for what you are looking for, assuming they are part of the family and live primarily in the house and "under foot." If the family needs protecting, they will know it. You don't have to teach them. It's what dogs do. I had a Golden who was extremely well socialized. He was the model for my obedience class for 15 years. He loved everybody. Kids sat on his back. Strangers kissed him. But one night someone sneaked into our back yard at midnight. This dog not only ran him off, he got a piece of his baggy trousers as the kid leapt over the fence. Dogs know.
Thank you! This is the sort of information I wanted but couldn’t find.

I always ask people "Can/May/Is it ok if I pet your dog?'' before reaching out a hand, and I always let the dog sniff my hand before actually petting it. I never use a squealy baby voice with a dog that I don't know, more like a soft 'Hell-ooo, aren't you cute!' in just a quiet voice lol
I AM THE SAME WAY! it's common curtsy to ask before touching anything of somebody else and super-squeaky voices can freak dogs out.

If I KNOW the dog and am playing with it, I'll use a high pitched voice, but only if it's a puppy, and with puppy I make sure to differentiate a play voice, a big dog voice (deep voice for when I'm telling the puppy not to do something), and a calm voice (for giving commands)

Wanted to share this dog with you guys, I think its simply stunning
