Are there any good general questions to ask about a breed of dog? Going to a samoyed show next month!
When you approach someone, always ask first if they're a handler, an owner, or a breeder. You want to find breeders, but OHs are ok too.Are there any good general questions to ask about a breed of dog? Going to a samoyed show next month!
so far my question are
Do they get along with cats?
How much grooming do they need? (I have heard from everyday to every 3 weeks)
Can they ever be let of leash? (With proper training)
How destructive are they?
I'd probably say something like- "our family has several cats. Do you think that a samoyed could be taught to get along with them, or do you think that it would be too risky?''Do they get along with cats?
Sometimes there will be a trait you never would think to ask, that's obvious to the people who raise them.
So maybe something open-ended like:
What is the best thing about this breed?
What is the worst thing about this breed?
Is there anything I really need to know about this breed?
(Questions about "best" and "worst" will usually get different answers from different people, so just think about what each answer tells you about the breed in general, and their dogs in particular.)
Thank you! When you approach someone, always ask first if they're a handler, an owner, or a breeder. You want to find breeders, but OHs are ok too.
My usual list is:
What is your grooming routine for them?
Do they eat a particularly high or low amount of food?
Do you compete in any other sports with them aside from conformation?
How social are they?
What are common health issues in the breed?
How much exercise do they get daily? How much mental exercise?
I don't really like 'how destructive are they' because any dog of any breed can be destructive if not properly stimulated. I prefer 'Are they the kind of dogs that can chill on a rainy day/miss a day of exercise, or will they redecorate with pieces of your couch unless you keep them busy?
What do you like about the breed?
Is there anything you dislike about the breed?
Is there anything that you would warn a first time owner about/Is there anything that you wish you knew when you started in the breed?
