What exactly IS backyard breeding? Like, I know what it is… but I feel like I need a thorough definition. Is it someone that “breeds” mixed breeds or someone that breeds a purebreed but completely not to standard and unhealthy/unethical?

it's someone who is breeding ''casually'', to make a profit. These people don't compete or health test their dogs, because those things cost money, and hurt their profit.
Personally, regardless of health testing, I will never support a breeder of 'designer' dogs or colors, because I think that their breeding is a slap in the face to those who have devoted their lives to preserving a breed. There are also pet breeders, who don't breed anyting 'designer' and don't breed off standard, but they don't compete in anything with their dogs. I want a competition dog, so I wouldn't buy from them.

There is a legit breeder of english cream goldens right near me, she has beautiful dogs and has a wonderful breeding practice. We would get one but her wait list is like two years

me now 'yeah she does all of her health clearances, but tbh her dogs are kinda ugly and I want performance dogs so nah'
