Chickentrain's Dog Q&A

Does everyone think a 107 question questionnaire is a bit ridiculous for a breeder to do or normal?
I think it took an hour to complete it definitely took over 30 minutes.

It had questions like how will you socialise the puppy to traffic, dogs, livestock. How will you toilet train it. A lot of questions where you could write a very long thing on it. It is apparently meant to gauge how experienced you are and other things, but their was no question of whether we had had a puppy before

Also a what is everyones thoughts on a breeder doing a homecheck?

Oddly, he hasn't been interested in eating his dry food. He ate the dental chew I gave him when he was interested, but he just ate that and not his regular food. We've also been giving him wet food, which he'll eat.

Basically, my question is:

Any ways to get him eating his dry food?

I would keep feeding him as much wet food as he needs until he's completely over the effects of everything that happened.

Yes, I would keep offering the dry food, maybe even offer to hand-feed it or put some water on a small amount to get it moist, but I wouldn't make a big deal out of it yet.

He might be extra-picky because he's feeling miserable, or perhaps the wet food is genuinely better for him at this time and he can tell that (I doubt it, but it is a possibility.) Either way, if he's still having some effects from what he ate and the treatment he needed, I don't think it's the best time to be pushing the issue of which food he eats.

Hey there, quick question regarding my older sister miniature poodle, Oliver.

Background:
He has some health issues, including Addisons, chronic yeast infections, Degenerative Disk Disease, and maybe some other things that I don't remember.
Anyway, he's kinda clumsy, but super sweet, and will eat ANYTHING that he can get his mouth around. Or not. He used to eat the drywall when he was a pup, ate anything off the floor, loves raw onion, poisonous mushrooms, grapes, and all things bad.

He is usually SUPER energetic when it comes to feeding time. He'll jump up on you, bark, bounce around, run super fast... but recently (3 weeks ago) he got out in the unfenced yard. He ate some pumpkin (which was a little moldy) and we suspect he ate mushrooms. We gave him some of his regular dog food and then hydrogen peroxide, but all he vomited was white, thick, marshmallow-fluff-consistency foam. We took him to the vet (who thankfully could see him)

They induced vomiting and gave him back to us, asking for us to come back a week later for a blood draw. He seemed ok, (we gave him medicine that they gave us) but a couple days later he started vomiting again, so we took him back. (they think the medicine, though it usually works, sometimes doesn't agree with all dogs, and Oliver might be one of them) They did an X-ray, physical (all of which looked normal) but his blood levels were off. They were initially concerned that cancer might be mixed in there, but after a while they redrew blood, it still wasn't great, but didn't seem like cancer any more. They gave him some strong anti-nausea medicine, and sent him back home with us. Since then, we've been giving him a different medicine, and keeping a close eye on him.

Oddly, he hasn't been interested in eating his dry food. He ate the dental chew I gave him when he was interested, but he just ate that and not his regular food. We've also been giving him wet food, which he'll eat.

If he used to be super excited about eating his dry food, and now he's not, that's a sign that something's still wrong- have you told the vet?

I'd just mix it in to his wet food or use it for training or enrichment games.

If it feels like they're being kinda invasive, then they're doing it right

107 questions is on the long side, but I'd be more concerned if it was super short

My issue is how long it is , and some of the questions would be better to be asked on a phone call or in person

“Are you happy to health test your Samoyed under the KC health schemes (for hip dysplasia and eye health)?

This would allow us to keep an eye on the health of our breeding and plan future breeding decisions that avoid propagating any potential health issues.“

I understand why they asked this question, but I don’t really like it because as far as I know just to send in the x-rays to the scheme for hip dysplasia is 70+ pounds, not including getting the x-ray.I don’t mind doing it if they will pay for it. It would feel better if this was “in-person” some how, rather then a question on a questionnaire

“Are you willing to give your vet consent to speak to us and release veterinary records/health reports to us if necessary?”
Ummm no they should talk to use first not go to the vet

There where quite a few questions about what you would do if your puppy started doing this, such as “Your puppy growls at you if you try and take food or a toy from it.”
“Your puppy is retching yellow foam first thing in the morning.”
“Your pup hates being brushed and fights and mouths the brush.”
“Your pup jumps up against kitchen worktops and pulls things off”
you could write a entire page on some of the subjects and it feels like I won’t be able to ask the breeder questions because I am supposed to know everything all ready. Also a lot of my training will depend on the temperament of the puppy I get, and some things there isn’t enough information for me to be able give a good answer because it could be a lot of different things
“Your pup is hyperactive and manic in the house and refuses to settle down while you watch TV.“
