I took my 4 week old chicks out today. They seemed to like it for about ten min. Then they started sitting down... Beaks were open. We're they too hot? it was only 85 degrees. No shade though. I need to make them a shade spot. I had them on bare dirt with some random grassy spots.

Ya they were to hot.. A chickens feathers are like human cloths if u wore a snow jacket in 85 degree weather with no shade so they were just hot if u out them in shade an have a waterer out there yet will stay out there as long as u let em

All chickens start panting at 85 degrees, start suffering at 95 and start dying at 105.
They like the random sunbath but normally seek the shade even in cool weather.
It's imperative to have shade for them and to place the coop in a shady spot.

I agree, no matter the temp if you have them confined they should always have the option of shade. If they are not confined they will find a cool spot on their own.
