I am wondering if they would be able to get away from our cats if they got after them at this age? Was wanting to let them free range more than what I do but I can't sit out there all day long to allow them to free range. Just wondering at what age would they be safe from the cats? We have 3 that dearly LOVE birds and are constantly catching them to eat!

ugh I should have said 9 week old not 2 months and a week old so no one would think I have one week olds out free ranging. lol time for bed! can't half think!

If your cats are known bird lovers I wouldn't risk leaving them unsupervised while the chicks are free ranging. Rather let the chicks out for a set period every day, when you have time to watch them. Cats generally don't bother full grown chickens, so I would wait until then before letting them free range full time and keep an eye on the kitties to see what they do at first, just in case...

thank you.... they don't seem even interested in the chicks. Really weird because it's like they know they're pets like they are. I'm totally surprised to say the least!!!

Our cats are great ratters (bring at least 3 or 4 each weekly) but steer clear of our hens-- they do not try anything with them and our hens are fairly docile-- they will crowd around the cat and then finally work up the courage and one will give a peck and then the cat will run away. With small small chicks I would still sort of worry (we had 4 new chicks hatch out and they were free ranging with their mama by day 8 but Mama is so protective the cats have steered clear)-- but by 9or 10 weeks they should be less of a target...

Good to know! I am feeling more confident about them free ranging now because they look really big. lol Saw the cat out there yesterday evening but was out there watching them so it just turned and went the other way. I let them free range for hours today since I was out there mowing and cleaning the patio etc.
THANX!!!! :)
