Chicks acting weird

I got my first two chickens about 3 days ago. I am following the directions the Tractor Farm Supply place gave me, but one of the chicks are standing around with its mouth open and kinda sitting on top of the other chick I bought! Is that normal for it to have its mouth open?

mouth open panting? too hot.... make sure they can drink...

Sounds like the chick might be too warm. They keep their mouths open like that to try and cool down. Adult chickens do this and chicks do too. Make sure they have an area in the brooder where they can escape the heat lamp if they want too. Mine sleep together alot. Sometimes on top of each other. Only worry is if you had a lot of them there could be a pile up and some might smother. With only a few chicks they probably just enjoy the companionship. Good luck with them. Diane

To add pics go to Uploads on the top toolbar. Then upload your pics and change size to post size. Then when uploaded select the post size url and copy and paste to your message. Any questions just PM me.

Put a thermometer in the brooder where the chicks are (under the light). Should be at 95* the first week and then drop 5* each week after until they are fully feathered and can go outside.
