I have a 10 day old Serama chick (she is the one in my avatar) with sight problems so I have been hand feeding her - chick starter, hard boiled eggs and yogurt. I'm finally teaching her to eat on her own (she can see the metal bowl and naturally goes towards it now) but she has become picky. She picks out the eggs and refuses to eat the starter! Makes me wonder just how much she can see

I've been putting less and less egg in her mixture everyday but she just stops eating when the eggs are gone. So I'm wondering just how long they can eat hard boiled eggs before I have a real problem on my hands with her health - more than I already do? I want her to get all the nutrients she needs to continue growing but it seems like I'm in a catch 22 at the moment. I should mention that she is getting poly-vi-sol daily too. I'm hoping once she gets a little bigger (she literally fits in a teaspoon right now) she will eat the starter but until then, is there anything else I can try that will give her more of the stuff she needs as a chick or is it ok to continue with the eggs for awhile longer? Other than her impaired sight, she is doing great. Her poop is pretty normal - different because of the lack of starter - but nothing to indicate she is ill or has other internal issues. She's active and interactive, just smaller than her hatch mates.

I could be wrong, but I wouldn't worry about her eating anything else right now. Offer it to her, sure, but if she's doing fine don't fix what's not broken.

I augment all of my nutritional needs birds' feed with baby parrot formula. It's a powder consistency and is very palatable, so they eat it right up. I would mix that with the eggs, and then as time goes on, you can decrease the egg, then decrease the formula. It has tons of nutrients and probiotics, so that will help boost anything the eggs don't have for now, while helping build gut flora.

You can get it at the pet store.

Good luck!

Awesome! Thank you both so much! I will look for the baby parrot formula today and try to stop worrying so much

I figure she must be getting something she needs since she is still alive and kicking 10 days later but I didn't want to ruin her long term health by not feeding her what she needs now.

I have to thank you again for the suggestion. I picked some up at the pet store and she absolutely loves it! I mixed it into her yogurt, starter and egg mixture I made this morning (she picked out all the eggs again lol) and she is still eating it as I type. She is eating all of it, not just the eggs. I love this stuff!!
