Yup, the chick needs to be a lot older, as in 8 weeks old. After that age the chick should be able to stand temps without artificial heat. If silkies are like other fowl they will beat the youngster silly and may injure it unless it is old enough to run fast and has room to escape. Many youngsters escape by flying to a roost. Totally out of the question with silkies.......Pop
Most of my silkies roost on the lowest rung - about 10 inches off the floor. One of my silkie roos (who thinks he is a standard "big guy") roosts 6 ft. off the ground with his big hens.

do silkies not roost? even on a low one?
mjsdhs, the refference was actually to the silkies inability to fly to safety. You may be aware that silkies don`t fly. I`ve never owned silkies, so I can`t comment on them roosting on low roosts, but I would think that they would appriciate a low roost......Pop
Thanks for you advise. Grayce and I are really developing a close bond, Now I'll never want to put her/him into the coop, oh well my son is off at college I guess the chick can have his bed.
