Hey Chicken Lovers ;)
Could you guys tell me can my Silkie hatch her young and have them grow up in the same coop that other hens walk around in? And if so, can you give me an Idea as to what hens would not hurt the young chicks :)
Thank you soooooo much :p
Packie..

Thank you for the reply, do you think a Light Sussex would harm the chicks?

very hard to tell! some will leave them alone, some will kill them ! I know its sad, but I rather seperate them for your safety. Hopefully someone else will chime in !

Some hens have different temperaments then others. My Red Sex Link is WONDERFUL with babies. As is my SLW and neither have ever gone broody.

My RSL girl hangs out in the grow out pen to avoid roosters. She needs some TLC as they've mounted her to near nakedness.

Doesn't mind the babies one bit!

I had the same question. My Buff Orpington just surrogated four Barred Rock chicks. I have two other BO hens in the same coop. I have kept them separate, which is getting to be difficult. The chicks are four days old now. If I mix them, will they hurt them?

They shouldn't, but they could. Most broody mothers will take care of protecting their young. I have a lot of broodies. Right now I have 2 sitting on eggs, 1 raising 10 chicks, and 2 co-parenting 21 chicks.

They all have free access to wherever they want to go. There are a few squabbles, but everyone is pleasant for the most part. No one was injured or killed :) I also have 4 week old chicks WITHOUT a mama running around with everyone. There is 30 4 week olds running rampant. 21 5 week olds, 10 3 week olds.. It's chaos at my house!
