Hello! My husband and I are taking this opportunity to raise chickens as a learning experience for my daughter as part of her homeschooling. I am brand new at this, but I must say that I'm really enjoying it. We have 13 chicks, ranging from 3-5 weeks old. They are together in a large crate in the shed. This past weekend, we were given a very kind rooster with a mild temperament who is residing in the chicken coop. We were wondering at what point could we introduce the rooster to the young birds. How would you go about introducing them? He seems a bit lonely, and I'd hate to make him wait a long time if it would be harmless to introduce them sooner rather than later. Thank you for your help!

Thank you! Any insight as to when would be a good idea for an introduction? I read 10-12 weeks. Thoughts? Do you think I should introduce visually first, and then a fence between them for a week or so.

I usually do a 3 week introduction were the first two weeks the new chicks have there own fenced of space then I feed them near the fence so they start to eat together but when u release them fighting is completely normal and just let it happen if it happens for to long separate again and try again in a few week I would start the process when there at 10 weeks

My insight says it is a good risk them now. Watch at first. If problems, you will likely see them develop in the first minute or so. I would make so chicks have a little space to avoid rooster if they desire. I bet the rooster will take a prompt interest in helping chicks find eats.

In my experience roosters will actively protect chicks and jeuveniles, you normally have more trouble with hens establisshing a pecking order.
In all my time keeping chickens ive only ever seen a rooster attack another bird that threatens donminance, my brahma boy will even protect the broody hens from the rest of the flock, they are very noble really....... unless they see you as a threat, then they are total nobs
