So I got a small flock of hens and one rooster a few months ago. The hens are a variety the rooster is silkie. Now fertilized eggs one of those hens has been brooding are hatching. Ive got one chick and one egg pipped so far this morning. There is a total of 11 eggs from several hens under her. Anyway now I am realising I have no idea what to do next. Talk about unprepared for the birth!! Should I leave them with mom or move them to a bin once hatched? Do they need chick crumble right away or does mom feed them at first? Basically I need all the info anyone can give me. These chicks are hatching as I type. Im excited but also nervous and I dont want to do anything to mess with the mother doing her job.
Thanks in advance !

Have food for the chicks and water available, and leave them with mom. She will make sure that everything goes smoothly, you just need to give her the resources.

Also, are they with the flock or in a separate coop/area?

The flock is present but mom and chicks are in the coop. Nobody else is going in there except others hens to lay.
I'll get food and water placed inside now.
Thanks

that's momma you can see a hatching egg right next to her. That egg has finished hatching so I now have two chicks.

how common are aggressive hens? My silver lace wyandotte Lucretia showed no interest when she went in there earlier today. The first chick was out from under mom and she ignored him. Obviously I have no idea what to expect as far as future interactions. Funny thing is that chick is actually Lucretias. The egg he came from was hers.

Well, you've raised them. Which ones are more aggressive to the lowest in the pecking order? They would most likely be the most aggressive to the chicks.

Every chicken is different. Some absolutely despise chicks and will kill them on sight, others can completely ignore them. Nobody here knows your flock better than you do.

That would be Sorsha. She is definitely the one i would be most concerned about based on what you are saying.

I didnt raise them though I got most of them at about 10 months old. My rooster Ive had since he was 4 months as well as the broody hen sitting on the eggs.
