*CHICKS are HERE!!!* Egg Candling Pics: Progression Though Incubation

Pics
well i just took a egg out of my incubator. Day 14. It was smelly and i shook it, it felt like shaking a bottle of water. So i was wondering would it be bad if I shook all my eggs. It seems easier for me then candling. Can I?

Oh goodness, please don't shake your eggs, you could hurt the embryos! If they stink, by all means throw them out, but shaking them isn't a good way to see if they are alive, you could probably just end up killing them all.

Yeah, you don't want to shake your eggs, could twist up the embryo although never tried shook vs non shook eggs. Vessels during development can be very fragile and if one got broken the embryo would likely die. A broken vessel during pip can often cause a chick to die without hatching.

If the incubator stinks, sniff each egg and toss the offender. Candle if you can, just don't shake.

got it sniff not shake. I just finished candling and i saw 2 eggs that hav the usual air bubbel but i saw a second bubble where the embroyo is a small clear buble. What is that. I tossed 2 eggs in total that were rotten

Oh wow! Thanks for this AWESOME post!!!! I'm attempting to hatch 3 eggs now...they are currently day 2,3,and 4 (ya I know....wrong way to do it) So far with a little LED flashlight all I see is the floating yolk, but it's way more apprent in the 4 day old egg, the 3 days old is next aparrent and the 2 dy old is even less. I'm hoping that's good sign. I plan to build a better candler soon.

I've now been able to do a comparison of my eggs and feel a whole lot better - was worried about how dark they'd gotten and not being able to detect any movement.

I've got a broody hen that left the nest today, which by my best calculations is day 23. Is that a good indication they aren't going to hatch? I tried candling with a flashlight inside a tp tube, egg on top, but to my untraied eye, they all look the same, except for 1 that the light doesn't penetrate. I'd guess that one to have a chick in it, but mom left early this morning while it was cold out. Would it even still be alive?

BTW-the candling pictures are great for someone like me that doesn't know what I'm looking at or what to look for, so thank you!
