chicks arrived :(

So sorry for the loss of your babies. Hope the hatchery replaces them quickly for you and your kids.

I'm sorry you and the kids and the chicks went through this. It is quite common in the extreme heat and extreme cold, and many others have had the same experience in the past few weeks. It's hard, because while having kids ready and waiting carries the risk of their being horrified at a bad outcome, it's also very hard to keep the chicks a secret from them or not let them be there for the exciting arrival.

I hope your remaining 4 do well, and that you eventually get to add to your flock. Buying locally carries its own risk (unseen disease) but depending on the source this may be a better option - particularly if you wanted more chicks about the same age to avoid integration issues.

Gosh that is terrible, I am so sorry. I have never had a problem with orders but now that I think of it, I have not ordered in July either. But that is also why I order from Ideal - they are in Texas and so am I, so it doesn't take long to get here at all.
Bless your heart. So sorry for the kids too.

So sorry to hear about your loss! The first year my mom ordered them she had a like 75% loss because the post office sent them to the wrong place for a day. She was so upset and I think I spent most of the night on the phone with her, on and off, while she tried to help the remaining ones hang on. Don't let it discourage you though, she only lost a few chicks in the years since.

You might want to just ask around here if anyone has chicks. I didn't think about it until after I ordered mine this year and turns out everything I wanted was available within an hours drive or so.

(((HUGS))) for you and yours - it will be better next time!

That is so sad. I am sorry for your loss. We thought about ordering chicks online, but I would have driven myself crazy with worry about them! We hatch ours now, but even that has its share of worry and heart ache. I have gotten many chicks locally through craigslist and recommend that to people who ask me.

I am glad you have 4 healthy chicks to play with.

Sorry for the poor chicks too. If you choose to get replacements through the hatchery, I'd wait until the weather is cooler. I wish hatcheries wouldn't ship chicks during times of extreme heat or cold...

Aww, I'm sorry that happened to you. I have a little one and I can only imagine how hard she would take it. If you don't mind the question, what hatchery did you order from?

Oh, gosh, I'm really sad for you! How especially awful for the children. I hope the remaining 4 will grow healthy and strong. Like others said, maybe you can find a hatchery closer to home. Hugs to you!
