I wasn't sure what section my mini rant belonged in!
Went to the livestock auction yesterday, I'm always saddened by people who don't know what the heck they are doing.
Its MARCH and a couple chickens didn't make it out of the box (I sit in the front row, so I see you stuffing that dead chicken under the table!) Someone brought stuff with MITES (they didn't take it out of the box, but eewwww if they hadn't caught it!) and there were more than a few that had scaley leg. Ick.
There was a whole bunch of *maybe* two or three day old chicks, it looked to me like most of those wouldn't make it home alive, unless the buyers had heated brooders in their cars! (It was COLD here in NY yesterday!) I packed my three and six week old stuff that AM so they wouldn't be in the cold car/auction site for longer than they needed to be.
I bought like 10 day old Silkies, and I worried about them, they all perked up just fine. They were active and cheeping when I bought them (They were up first thing) and I took them out and covered them up.
Mine were all healthy and active when they put them up, yet I got like a buck a chick, and the dead stuff went for 3-4 each?
I label my boxes, I sex my rabbits, I don't send anything unhealthy. I don't know why other people feel this is acceptable? How hard is it to take two seconds and write what is in the box? Kudos for the auctioneer yesterday who actually reads what I write! I hate going to ones where my Purebred and Heritage things are just "A rabbit" or "Its a Rooster"
Obviously I need to be bringing an "auction kit" with me that includes electrolytes, heating pads for chicks, feed and fresh veggies for water. I feel bad for the stuff that is in a box with no bedding or feed. Or two small a box shoved in with two other chickens.
They're checking the boxes for air holes and such when they bring them in, but they shouldn't have to ask how many chickens are crammed in this box? People like that make all of us look bad!
