Hi, new to chicks!
We just started raising our chicks 3 weeks ago We purchased them from a local feed store and noticed two seem to have very short beaks and they weren’t like that before.
Not sure what could be causing this or is this normal? I checked the feeder to see if that’s what’s causing it but my other 3 chicks have normal shaped beaks.. the tips just seem broken off

What is the name of the feed store, and do you know where they get their chicks from? Can you check with them and see if they get their chicks’ beaks trimmed at the hatchery? I do know that some stores sell started pullets with trimmed beaks so they do not peck each other. Is there anything in their brooder that they could have broken off their beaks, such as chicken wire?

Hi, thanks for the reply. It’s a very small mom & pop feed store. When I purchased them they were only a few days old and their beaks were all normal and pointed. I have checked everything. Everything is plastic. I had them in a small bin but noticed they are starting to get crowded as they get bigger. No chicken wire in their brooder. It’s a plastic tub with a heat plate. I put them in their big girl coop during the day today since our weather is really warm in the 90s. I will keep observing them to see what could be causing it.
Will there beaks grow back?

They looked like trimmedd beaks. Do you have pics of their beaks from when you first got them? I wonder if it was just too hard to tell when you first picked them out.

Omg! Of course I don’t have any clear pictures of their beaks but this is probably the best pictures I have the day we purchased them. However, I do remember these two chicks had dark tips on their beaks almost like they were bruised as you can see.. but I just thought that’s how they must’ve been born.

They must have injured them somehow, possibly from pecking at something. Are there any sharp feeders?
No sharp feeders. I’m using a plastic one. You can see it in the background in the first pictures. I took it apart to check if there was any sharp edges with my fingers and felt nothing sharp. This is really strange. Hoping they grow back normal . They looked like someone filed both chicks beaks but nobody has touched them. Super confused.

Do you have hardware cloth covering something they have access to? I had a chick do this by catching her beak in hardware cloth. It’s like fingernail it grows back.
