Chicks Butt

Posting and enquiring for a friend...any help on this?

It's hard to make out exactly what is going on from the pictures. That first picture looks like it could be a brownish coloured pasty butt? In which case soak the backside with warm water to gently remove it so that the chick can pass its poops. Otherwise hopefully someone else has info.

I have three of these chicks in with a bunch. They are eating and drinking fine, and pooping. They don't seem to be growing as well as the other chicks. sure hope someone can tell what it is.

Are the other chicks picking at them? Do they have parasites?

Looks like pasty butt to me too...I would get that off asap...they are probably picking at it because it feels bad (that's what mine did) and that's why his feathers are gone. Also other birds like to pick at pasty butt. I had three with it and one looked a lot like that because I didn't realize it..I was a new chicken mommy and didn't know of pasty butt. I would let their butts run under running warm water...hold them sideways...and gently rub at the pasty butt as it gets soggy...this may take up to 10 min so be very patient and let the chick rest in between for about a min or two...not to long or you have to start all over again! Then try to keep them separate if you notice the others picking at his butt, until they start growing some feathers back a little. If you don't get that off soon it may get to hard for them to poop and they could die.

It's not pasty butt and mom says they are pooping and eating fine.
If it was a parasite what should be used? and why did only 3 come with this and it not spread?

If it is a parasite, most people here recommend diatomacious earth (DE), which is harmless to the chicks. As to why only three are affected by whatever it is - I don't know.

Is there anybody out there who can help this Newbie?

Hi, thank you all for replying. It is not pasty butt and they are not getting picked at.
They are all the same age, just about a month old.
I use DE in my coop, sprinkle it liberally around everything, where they dust bath. When I clean out their area I put it on the floor before the bedding.
I have sat and watched and no one is picking at them. They are eating, drinking pooping and just not growing at all.
The skin underneath looks blue??? or black and as you can see covers a large area.
If it is a parasite, should I be using a mite/lice powder??
Or is there something that can be put in the water to help them?
