chicks dig in food

my chicks are tipping over and digging in their food how can i stop this? i hate the mess!

Have you tried elevating the feeder to the level of their backs?

How old are they?
I elevate my feeder after 10 days to 2 weeks and eventually hang.

Plenty old enough to use a traditional, hanging metal feeder like this:

Hang it at the level of their backs and waste will be minimized.

If you have chickens of different sizes put a brick or a block nest to the feeder for shorter flock members to stand on.

When my flock makes a mess, I don’t refill the feeder right away. I let them clean up the mess and then I refill their feeder.

Basically, eat everything on you plate before you go back for more.

I set my chick feeder in a pie pan. It contains most of the mess and makes it easier to reuse the billed out feed. I just pour it back into the feeder, from the pie pan.
