I have a dog kennel where I am brooding. The chicks are between 2 and 4 weeks old. This morning, I found a dead chick. I did find blood mixed in the pine shavings yesterday, but couldnt find out what happened. It had no visible injuries. The dead chick was 2 weeks old. This one hatched right on hatch day. Hatching was normal. I keep the kennel cleaned out every week, change the food and water daily. I have no idea what could've done this. Any help is appreciated.

****EDIT**** Please let me know if you need anymore information.

If you found blood, you need to treat the remaining chicks for coccidiosis. Go to Tractor Supply and purchase Corid. Or, most other feed stores will carry it also.

You will mix it in their water for 5 - 7 days. Don't delay! Coccidiosis is deady!..but,very easy to cure if caught in time!

I dont have any money, or a way to go there. Im not even sure if Magnolia Feed Store carries it. I can try the other feed store. Are there any home remedies?

None that I know of. It is a protozoan that will eat the intestinal lining. The chicks starve and bleed to death. Sorry. Call the stores before you go and find out if they have it and how much it is.

I am now in the process of putting them in the old brooder that I have, and out of the dog kennel that they're in. The old brooder has a screened bottom. I read that they can get it from the feces. I will use something to collect the feces and spilled feed so the older chickens can't get to it. Is it too early to put them outside? It's not cold (80s and 90s). I dont understand how they got this. they have been by themselves the whole time. the first 8 were brooded in a tote in the kitchen from the person i got them from. The rest were hatched here in my home. they have not been with other chickens at all.

Do I still need to keep the light on them, even thought they are outside? I was just using a 75W bulb wired to a dimmer (same one that i used for the homemade incubator), They are in the shade, but should I put a pan on them? I dont want them to overheat.....

I have heard that they can hatch with it. I'm not sure if that is true or, if they are born with some in their intestines and being little with no immunity they quickly get out of control. However they get it, there have been many chicks with Coccidiosis that have never touched ground. As far as the light. If it goes below 85 at night, they will need a light.
