I have no idea what is going on. I just hatched out 20 chicks. They hatched over a 3 day span and all were doing fine (except one born crooked) running around and chirping the were put in the brooder with a three week old chick that has never been outside. Then the second night I went to check on them and one was dead. I was surprised but it happens. The next morning three more were dead. All same symptoms. Fine one moment then becoming very lethargic laying with wings out and finally gasping. At death a clear slimy liquid came out the the beaks. I got them all on antibiotics and gave it to them in the brooder waterer and with a dropper. Also added some electrolytes. There has been no runny poo. FINALLY yesterday the dieing seemed to stop. I was left with 8 chicks and the three week old chick. But it seemed to be walking funny. Like one side was not working. It would walk a little bit lose its balance and lay down. Today it spent a lot of time laying down and I was giving it the meds/fluids by dropper. It has gotten worse not better. It cant stand on its own and its legs seem stiff as it keeps them pushed forward. I cant fold them up unless I push a little hard. Like the muscles are tight. Its breathing like the others seems fast and a little labored. If I pull its wings out it does not pull them back. just lets them hang. The eggs I hatched out are from my chickens and no chickens have come onto my property in a few months. The last time was in Feb when I got some chicks from a hatchery. They are all fine and outside. I also have not gone anywhere with chickens so I have no idea how the chicks even got sick like this!!! Any ideas?

Have you used this particular brooder set up before? Could be a toxin... Maybe try buying a new bag of feed, clean the waterers, change the bedding. Some light bulbs off gas toxins, or, if you cleaned the brooder with something strong and did not rinse well... Hope I've given you a few ideas.

So sorry your having to deal with this!

Yes I have used it before. I cleaned the waterer, and added the antibiotics to it. I use a heat light and its the same one I have used many times before. Yes I did get new feed....im at a loss here and its soooo sad....

Its odd because it wont lay down unless its on its side. I cant get its legs to fold up under it. They are just stiff

It just went to the bathroom and it was clear and smelled like pee....never seen a chicken pee?

I really don't have any new suggestions--change the feed, perhaps change the brooder, check to see that you don't have teflon-coated heat lamp bulbs that give off toxic fumes, and change the litter (bad batch?) What are you using for a brooder? Someone recently was having similar problems and was using an old aquarium. Many use /Rubbermaid containers, and I wonder about fumes in them. I hope you can figure out what is going on. Your chick is obviously suffering neurological symptoms, but I wish I knew how to help.

this is the three week old. He has been in this brooder for three weeks. The rest of the chicks were added last weekend after they hatched. The smaller chicks died much faster. So far this one is still alive but im dropper feeding it. I haven't changed anything on him except the chicks. It has never been outside and the the chicks just went from the hatcher to the brooder. Im still at a loss. And very sad....

Sorry for your loss. I would put vitamins in the water if you haven't done it. Here is an except from Miss. State University Ag Dept:
Symptoms Probable Cause Corrective Measures

Abnormal, weak, or small chicks High incubation or hatching temperatures Follow recommended incubation temperatures.
Small eggs hatch small chicks Set only standard or large sized eggs.
Insufficient incubation humidity Maintain recommended humidity for species of bird incubated..
Improper ventilation in hatcher unit Increase ventilation rate, but avoid drafts.
Diseased or poorly conditioned breeder flock Use eggs from disease-free sources only. Have NPIP representatives blood-test the breeder flock.
Improper nutrition of breeders Provide a well-balanced nutritional diet to breeders (especially vitamin levels).
Excessive fumigation in hatcher Fumigate using proper procedures.
