Hello everyone, ive been raising chickens for about 6 months now. Fyi all my chicks are wild caught so far. They are usually caught within the 1st week of their lives. I have a roister and hen 6 months old, strong and healthy. A few week old hen healthy. But i just caught two chicks yesterday, put them in a bin with crumble and water, they were good this morning when i left for work. But when i got home both were dead. I read it takes a couple days for a chick to die of dehydration, what could have killed them? If it was 1 i wouldnt be that concerned, but both? What can i improve?

They were OK overnight but died during the day. Did you check their bodies for injuries like puncture marks or bites? Could you post a photo of that bin and how it is set up? It doesn't sound like they were too cold since they made it through the night but how hot did it get that day?

To me it sounds like poisoning. Was the feed moldy or contaminated? How clean was the water and the bowl the water was in? Did you use cleaners or such that might have been dangerous?

Another possibility is carbon monoxide poisoning. Is there a potential source where you have them? That's happened to people on this forum before. Carbon Monoxide is heavier than air and will build up in the bottom of a solid bin until it is deep enough that they cannot breathe.

Just a home depot bin, with a screen top, clean water, aspen bedding mixed with unfertilized dirt no perlite or anything. No CO sources around, my other hen just came out of the same bin into a larger pen. No bites or visual damage. Ive raised a handful of chickens in the same fashion with no issues, maybe i just got lucky.

You mentioned something about chicks and dehydration? Why was that? If these chicks are more than 4 days old they need water at all times.
What did their droppings look like?

They have full access to water and food immediately, i mentioned it because i wasnt sure if stress could stop them from drinking. But i only had them for a little over 24 hours.
