I just got 4 barred rock chicks (I think one may actually be a Dominique but that doesnt affect my question) they are about a week old. I put the in their brooder with their feed and water and since we got them they have not stopped eating. We got them at noon and it's now 330. I've already had to refill their bowl. Is this normal? This is my 3rd batch of chicks and the first 2 never ate this much this young. I would usually find them sleeping and occasionally would see them eat. These 4 I havent seen sleep yet and are acting like they're starving. Heres a picture of them. That's their food under them and how theyve been for the past 3.5 hours.

It's normal for them to eat quite a bit.
How big is that box? It looks very tiny for a brooder for 4 chicks.

Oh, its definitely too small but it's very temporary. I'm about to move them over in about an hour when a friend brings a bigger box for me.

Unlike some other animals ( I'm thinking horses) chickens WON'T over eat.

No need to worry or stress! Chickens usually have signals for themselves that tell them that they are full, or that they don't need to eat more. My chickens always act like they are starving when I feed them as well :). When they are full they will leave a bit a finish it later. You don't need to refill unless it's completely empty.

Ok, friend just informed she couldnt make it today. I taped the 2 biggest boxes I have together. Would this be ok for now. This was a very late notice thing. Someone was giving them away because they "kept escaping through the chicken wire and they were all dying." Yeah, they had them outside, without heat, in a chicken wire tractor, with pellet food. These were the last survivors. Might explain why they're eating so much. They may be starving.
